Dancegiving Concert Review

What's up haters. Hope you had a great thanksgiving, I know I certainly did with Dancegiving the next night. Here's my review and all the music that you need to know about. WARNING: HEAVY DUBSTEP INFLUENCE HERE.

We got to the Electric Factory at right about 9, so just in time for the second opener Michael Meyers. He killed it with a bunch of favorites like Pendulum, Avicii, Feed Me and Kaskade, a perfect opening that got everyone on their feet and pumped up for the night. And he played one of my personal favorites, a Ken Loi mash-up thats a mix of trance and hard hitting house. Great Performance.
All You (anger dimas remix) - Kaskade
Blessed (Avicii edit) - Tom Hangs feat/ Shermanology
U & I Rebound ( Ken Loi mashup) - Arty, Mat Zo vs. GTA feat Zashanel

Next up was David Solano as the final opening act. Theres no other way to say this...he murdered his set. I was going nuts along with every person in that hall. Crashing bass, thumping beats and sick hooks just murdering his hour set. The highlight was definitely bringing in Linkin Park's In The End with a massive dubstep drop. AWESOME.
DJ Kryptos - In The End (Dubstep Remix) - Think this but even harder and more womps.
Then right at the end of his set, I heard something really familiar. At the time I thought it was Armin, but oh no my friends, it was better ( I'm sorry Armin, ur still the best). It was Tomahawk by BT & Adam K.
Tomahawk - BT and Adam K GET THIS!!!!!

And so the openers concluded their sets and it was time for the main event. Amid the screaming, yelling and raging, a guy 19 years old walks onto stage; there he is, Porter Robinson. I came into this event thinking Wolfgang was far and away the best act, but damn was I wrong. Absolutely stunning show. Combinations I never thought of leading to one hell of a dance party. Going from Avicii's Levels right into Raise Your Weapon (Madeon remix) dropping with Say My Name by Porter. Just straight Wild.
Levels - Avicii
Raise Your Weapon (madeon remix) - Deadmau5
Say My Name - Porter Robinson

And then came the main event. Wolfgang Gartner himself. Opening up with an absolute classic, Flash by Queen, from that moment we knew that this was gonna be an event. He proceeded to thrash the dance floor with all the hits from his new album flushed in between dance anthems, thumping dutch house and some good ole fashioned house to keep you going. Highlights were definitely undertaker, Bob Marley mashed with The Way it Was, and Animal Rights. Place was going absolutely wild.
B.Marley vs. Wolfgang
Undertaker - Wolfgang Gartner

And then, right as I was about to leave, shit got weird. I had completely forgotten about The Devil From Acapulco. Now this wasn't my cup of tea, a silver painted dude running around in a loincloth and lights playing hard hittin' shit, but what the hell it was 2 in the morning, why not? And so we raged to some more party songs and dub drops for another half hour. Even he put on a great show.

As a final verdict, this is a tough decision for me, but the best act was definitely Porter Robinson. He's 19, and he outdid who some consider the best US DJ (Wolfgang) and put all the other acts to shame. This kid's going places, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us in the years to come.

For those of you that couldn't make it out, I strongly encourage you to go see something like this either in your hometown of in a city like Philadelphia, DC, NYC, or any other big city. It is something you will never forget. And here's some video coverage of what you missed.

much love,

Sunspot Jonz

Sup Haterz

Sunspot Jonz is one of the founding members of the California based hip hop group, Living Legends.

"Sunspot Jonz grew from the East Oakland soil that kills so many of its own seeds. Resilience, intellect, and the gift of gab allowed him to overcome more challenges in his youth than most people face in a lifetime. In the environment in which he lived, and so many of the homies died, Sunspot kept the original vision of Hip Hop alive, with a four track and dream, hustling tapes on Telegraph Ave., guerilla style, a warehouse livin’, Top Ramen eatin’ savage, sending a different message than all the other MC’s in the game. His life experience made him know that any human being can control their own destiny. Any human being can choose to ignore the negativity that society attempts to force upon us, and choose a different reality. Sunspot Jonz is a visionary."

A Whole New Genre for you Haters

Sup haters. Today I'm bringing you a new type of music for WDH, its called Trance. If you've ever thought electronic music was too hype, too basic, or too simple or party based only, nows the time to pay attention. Trance is the root for most electronic stars' rise to fame. To site a few, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyke (3 of the best ever) and Daft Punk. So yeah, its pretty good.

In honor of Armin Van Buuren's most recent show last saturday in DC, here is something he does every year combining the years best trance music into a 2 disc mixed cd. Here's 2010. This is without a doubt, MY FAVORITE ELECTRONIC MIX EVER. Props to my boi Luke for the find. Enjoy.

Much Love,

Mr. Little Jeans-The Suburbs (Cry Wolf Remix) + Bonus

Howdy Haterz

Just checked Hypem and this was the #1 track. Mr. Little Jeans , ironically is a woman. Pictured darkly below. What I love about this Cry Wolf Remix of this Arcade Fire song covered by the aforementioned tight jean wearer, is its dubstep feel minus the drop. There are some sections that you might call a drop but really they are just dub womp womp influenced (no real buildup or beatdown section). I love how dubstep and electronic music are evolving and reacting with one another. The future is looking bright.

Sup Gang

This weekend my buddy Chas rolled up to the 401 and with him came my introduction to a dope up and coming Electro-Duo:

BoomBox consists of two DJ's: Russ Randolph and Zion Rock Godchaux
"Together they develop an electronic blend of vintage Rock and Blues made to move dance floors while incorporating their signature Backbeat, Psychedelia and Funky House sounds. Applying a multi-track platform, they are free to create their hybrid style on the fly with a rhythm that moves fans and opens them up to Godchaux and Randolph’s overall vision. Derived from the rich musical history of Muscle Shoals, AL, to the psychedelic rock and underground electronic scenes of the west coast, their unique approach can only be achieved by the blending of sound and culture."

Heavy D & The Boyz-Nuttin' But Love (Cooking Soul Remix)

Stumbled across this beautiful remix this morning. I have been listening to it since 9:00AM on repeat. Heavy D is just too good and so understated/underrated. Cookin' Soul does his thing with the track as usual.

Diplo & Odd Future @FunFunFunFest

For all you techno fans and hip hop fans you should be watching the live stream of Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin on Pitchfork TV. FunFunFunFest Live Stream it's absolutely F***ING NUTS. Flying Lotus just absolutely killed it with a DJ set I had no idea he was capable of and sounded just like what I think the late great JDilla would sound like if he were alive today. Diplo is already dropping dubstep beats and going HAM right off the bat. And the one and only ODD FUTURE WGKTA is on after that and you know that's bound to be absolute INSANITY. Anyway GO WATCH THESE SETS RIGHT NOW.

Mau5 Magic

Sup haters, haven't had a lot of spare time this week, but these two gems should make up for my neglect. First up, new Deadmau5 track previewed and found on the internet as a set rip, things are looking good for the king, after the dissapointing 4X4=12 release, give me more of this. 9/10

Next up is a strobe remix by Special Features. Completely changes the tempo and the feel. This is dope. Excellent work by the man from Down Under. 9/10

BONUS: Avicii- ID2 (pixel cheese remix)

Heart Vacancy - The Wanted (DJs From Mars Club Mix)

Its been a minute but this is worth the wait. Seriously though favorite song at the moment.

The Goods

Mornin' Haterz

Here are some dope mashups to get you through to the day before the weekend....

White Panda (White Town X Dorrough)-Your Woman

something i love about the dark undertone of the beat mixed with Dorrough's dumb ass lines..clean on the outside.

DOSVEC-Stuntin' Dog Days

self explanatory I think...Florence X Lil Wayne and Birdman...diggin this track because they maintain the original Dog Days track, a real mashup up. no fake drum kits or anything. awesome..

DOSVEC-Feeling Good

(Flo Rida // The Black Eyed Peas // Taio Cruz // Lady Gaga // Justin Timberlake // The Ting Tings // Ellie Goulding // The Cardigans // Edward Maya // Vika Jigulina)”---generally not a fan of these mega-mashups, if you will but this one is pretty damn good. THATS MY NAME!

The White Panda (Wale X Dillon Francis)- G.O.O.D.G.I.R.L.S

very sick track...number one on hype and for good reason.

TheHoodInternet-Big Sean X Wolfgang Gartner

if you cant tell by the back of his head this kids 17 looks 12 is a beast.

Been a minute huh? Things are getting busy here in 'Cuse, November is crunch time. November is also Movember, so fellas remember to start growing your mustaches out to support prostate cancer Mustache Month.

Besides that I got a chance to see a free show last night put on by University Union, the live events division of our student government. A few years ago they started the Bandersnatch series in an effort to bring more indie/underground acts to Cuse. Last night was part of the Noisy College Tour and featured Kreayshawn and Neon Indian. I LOVE Neon Indian, like one of my all time favorites since I heard their first single Deadbeat Summer a few years ago. The band is led by Alan Palomo and they're a sort of chillwave inspired poppy-yet not too upbeat-kinda electro outfit. I'll post more on that later.

This post is about the rap phenom/anomaly/former drug dealer/pink mustang owner/craigslist pimp/most hated chick in music besides Rebecca Black....Kreayshawn. There's a lot of differing opinion being thrown around about this chick. What I do know is she was lucky enough to grace the cover of Complex and she doesn't look half bad (if you're into that). Seeing her live I gotta say, she's kinda sexy (in her own hoodrat sorta way). Check out the article for an in-depth look at Kreay: Kreayshawn: About to Blow?

Her performance was decent at best, I was actually planning on missing it. The way the concert was billed it looked like she was the headliner, which made no sense at all, so I showed up early to see Neon Indian and was planning on leaving before her set. But alas, after a brief DJ set Kreay just kinda jumped out on stage and started going at it bringing with her Vanessa "V-Nasty", another member of her group White Girl Mob. The audio was not mixed well, either that or they were purposely trying to drown her out. When you could hear her voice it sounded shrill and it was usually lost under the beat. There were probably like five white girls who were really really feeling it and maybe a handful of other fans. The only time there was even remotely any enthusiasm was when she did her hit Gucci Gucci. Check out the video...note the Uggs haha.

Now I can't just hate on the chick. If you listen to the lyrics she's actually got a pretty decent flow but her live game needs a lot of work. She didn't interact with the crowd enough, seemed a little awkward in between songs and didn't really have a great rapport going on with her DJ. Overall what made Kreay a success was her viral video. I think she needs to find an element of what made that so popular and bring it to her live show. Apparently she inked a recording deal with nine numbers in it so she's not going anywhere anytime soon. She's got the right hook and she's got a good angle, now she needs to solidify her fan base and really tune up her live show. Maybe release a mixtape with a famous DJ or get some solid collaborations going on.

Post more on the rest of the show and Neon Indian's awesome set later. In the meantime I would check out the live video, see what you think, then let me know in the comments. PEACE.

SQuires-Peaches (Prod. RPM)

What's good.

So I did a post on Robotic Pirate Monkey the other day and I was inspired to do a rap over their song "Peaches". Whipped it up over the past day and a half for your listening pleasure.

EMERGENCY POST: What Would You Do? (City High Cover)-Bastille

Just found this on the Hype Machine....

This is the best song I have heard in a long ass time.

This is a cover of the classic track by City High.

What Would You Do? (City High Cover) by BASTILLE
